The Reel Academy is a 6-week "bridge" program whose mission is to introduce the craft of story-telling through filmmaking to a group of “at risk” Transitional Young Adults from various under-served communities of Los Angeles. The program will allow these youths to attend the set of a Hollywood-produced film, meet the producers, director, actors, director of photography, lighting designer, production designer, make-up artist and sound mixer. After the on-set production of the film, the group will attend the post-production process, where they will meet the editor, composer and sound effects producer. They will have the opportunity to see how a film is put together and meet the people who do it. After postproduction, the group will be interviewed by a television anchor about their experiences participating in the program, and their aspirations for the future. These interviews will be included on the film's "making of" DVD. Following completion of the program, two-week internships will be sought for each group member with entertainment-related companies. The entire journey of these kids throughout the program will be filmed by Matthew JC of Small Guy Music and produced as a documentary film.
Emerging arts organizations and projects that do not yet have 501(c)(3) designations may apply to the Pasadena Arts Council to act as a fiscal sponsor, allowing the organization to seek funding from grant makers, donors and corporations.
